This bike is basically OK, but I pity anyone who might try to assemble it without the proper tools.

All nuts and bolts are metric.The tires were deflated.Worst I found was that the width of the front forks and the the width of the axle mounting points did not match.I had to spread the forks apart with brute force to get them to go around the inner nuts on the axle.The forks brackets were half a bolt too narrow.I could either leave the nuts on and spread the forks or remove the nuts and really have to tighten the forks together about 1/4".Print and diagrams on the instruction sheet were so small, they were basically useless.Had to use a magnifying glass.

I had all of the tools and a compressor, so aside from the front forks, assembly was not a problem.

Grandaughter is enjoying the bike.Only problem so far has been handlebars that are slightly loose.I have tightened them down.Hopefully, that will be enough.

Huffy makes the same bike without the Car decoration and oddly it gets bad reviews even though mechanically it is the same bike and cost under [...] at big chain stores.

This was a good price for this bike my one complaint is my son is only tall enough for the seat to be all the way down and when the seat is all the way down the cranks are a little too long and make it hard to ride but he will grow into it. He was to tall for a 12" and on the border for 16".

This bike seems solid the only thing I see wearing out are things easily replaced and normal wear a tear. (tires, peddles, handle grips,)

My 3 years old son loves it since he is a Cars freak.Nothing special about this bike other than it is blight red and it is a Lightning McQueen.Assembled easy, but the manual is worthless.Shipping box and packing material was not so good so some parts were sticking out of the box, but no damages were found.Weight distribution is excellent and trading wheel is adjustable.Over all this is an excellent safe bike for small children.

The photo doesn't show it, but the handle bars are spread really wide, which forces your kid to have his arms up and hands spread apart in a not-natural way. This makes it really hard to control the bike. Bad design. I'm going to see if I can buy a normal pair of handle bars because I've had the bike too long to return it. Wish I never bought it.

Product Description:
With its cool angled frame and sharp graphics, the Mongoose Racer 12-inch boys' bike is ideal for aspiring BMXers just learning to ride. The bike is equipped with such features as a durable steel frame, a coaster brake for sure stopping, and sleek three-spoke Mag wheels. The bike's quick-release seat post, meanwhile, is designed to accommodate fast-growing kids. And riders will love the heavy-duty training wheels, which help them stay safe while learning. Other details include a fully enclosed chain guard to keep grease in and fingers out; a number plate and pad that add style and comfort; and smooth 12-inch tires with steel rims.
About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.
The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).
In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.
In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose's brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

Schwinn Scorcher Boys' Bike (16-Inch Wheels) Review

Schwinn Scorcher Boys' Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before reading this, please understand that we sold our car last summer, so our family uses bikes for every-day commuting, be it to/from work, to/from preschool, or just grocery shopping.Bikes are less "toys" for us, than hard-working transportation that must function well!

We got this for my son for the holidays, just before his 4th Birthday.There were some issues with the manufacturer that delayed shipping, but the seller made herculean (and successful!) efforts to make sure the bikes all arrived by Christmas.

My husband assembled this bike late Christmas Eve in the livingroom.While the manual was less than helpful for this (Schwinn, apparently, makes one general manual that covers all types of bikes, and therefore doesn't feel it necessary to make model-specific manuals -- or assembly instructions!), he was able to get it ready in a reasonable amount of time.Like all bikes, it comes with the tires deflated, so I had to take it to get air in them.(Perhaps this is why one reviewer complained the tires were fat and soft?)

I was immediately impressed with how sturdy the bike is.Strong.It looked cool -- it was also going to withstand anything my son was likely to put it through in the years to come!

The first time my son tried it, we discovered the training wheels were set too low:The rear tire wasn't making enough contact with the ground to give "drive". A two-second adjust, and that was fixed.

The low "rise" in front of the seat makes it easy for little boys to get on.The combination of coaster and hand-brakes gives many options for learning to stop.One unexpected "bonus"?The front pegs actually keep the weight of the bike OFF the body during falls!

We've had the bike for one month now.He's gone from shakily riding to the corner while I strolled slowly next to him, to riding it to school (a 3-mile trip).

PROS:
* Sturdy contstruction
* "real bike" quality
* coaster AND full-caliper brakes
* Reflectors
* Quick-adjust seat
* Front pegs make falls safer (who knew?)
* Bike is tall enough for an adult to "walk" without breaking their back
* Can easily keep up with an adult on a full-sized bike.

CONS:
* My son's hands are not yet LONG enough to use the caliper brakes, because the levers are so far from the handlebars.
* Handlebar structure makes it difficult to mount a basket
* Training wheels are loud.(But, then, all training wheels are loud.)
